Scott Hodge: Heart of the City

June 17, 2011

What if, instead of being a church in the city, we could find ways to become a part of what makes our city what it is? What if our churches contributed solutions to the problems, broken systems, broken people in our cities? What if we utilized our best people for the greater good of our communities? What if we flipped it and ask “how can we help them with their thing?” How can we do a greater job of drawing out the potential that otherwise would be limited or not come to fruition. If our goal is to become an irreplaceable presence in our city – More than waiting until everybody comes into our church – Requires us getting good at sending people out. What are some of the ways we can move beyond being a city in our city to actually becoming a part of what makes our city what it is? What are your giftings, passions, unique DNA, distinct elements as a church? Something that has transformed my heart is getting to know my city. We become good at exegeting the scriptures. What if we could get as good at exegeting our cities? What if we walk our cities? Be present? You discover not just the beauty that is there, but you’ll discover the potential beauty. What are some of the ways we can move beyond being a church in our city to actually becoming a part of what makes our city what it is.

Discussion Questions:
1. What are some of the ways we can move beyond being a church in our city to actually becoming a part of what makes our city what it is?
2. When was the last time you walked your city?
