The opening of that nearby Asian fusion restaurant probably signals more than another great option for foodies. It’s a reminder that Asian-Americans are a growing presence and influence across North American culture. It’s an invitation for your church and mine to be more welcoming of our Asian-American neighbors.
The following links contain a podcast and slideshow. They both involve DJ Chuang, former Leadership Network Director for Asian-American Churches, and the helpful PowerPoint he co-authored, “Future for the Asian American Church.” This insightful resource looks at population growth (today 3.8M Chinese, 3.4M Filipinos, 3.2M Indians, 1.7M Vietnamese, 1.7M Korean, etc.), the emergence of Asian-American ethnic churches (4,000 Korean, 1200 Chinese, 800 Asian Indian, 300 Vietnamese, etc.) as well a “next generation” multi-Asian English-language churches, which have grown dramatically in number (at least 250 today). He also offers practical advice for how non-Asian churches can play a greater role in making disciples of Jesus Christ among their Asian-American neighbors.
