Joan Ball: Turning Point

January 28, 2011

I was sitting in the Dallas airport, trying to do this video. A big, tough looking man sat down near me and began to ask questions. I was giving one word answers, hoping he’d stop. Then the scripture came to me where some guys said to Jesus, “Lord when did we see you in need?”

I knew I needed to respond to this man. He asked if I was in recovery. (Yes) I asked him the same. (No) Had been clean for 15 years, but now wasn’t. He was really hurting. We talked about God, and prayer. He did believe in God and Jesus. But he was spiritual not religious. Talked repentance and about any given day walking to the light, or walking to the dark.

He said when he got off the plane, he’d stand at a turning point and have the opportunity to walk in one direction or walk in the other.

We finished and I looked at iMovie. It was clear to me in that moment that sometimes God is looking for us to be loving hands and not talking heads.

I offer this as an alternative to what would have been the Nines video that my best thinking would have resulted in.

Discussion Questions:
1. Describe a time when a “divine” appointment was in tension with your schedule. Which did you choose?
2. Describe a time when you were in need of “loving hands.”
