At the Generation Next installment of our Innovate:NOW! series on June 8, you will learn from these seasoned leaders, collaborate with other churches, and create action steps to help your ministry better connect with the next generation.
GRANT SKELDON: A Millennials Perspective
Speaker, Founder: The Initiative Network
We’ve all heard the stereotypes, and some of them are true, but what do millennials REALLY want from the church? The answer might surprise you. Here’s a hint: it’s not about rebranding or a better coffee bar. As a leader and discipler of millennials, Grant will share candidly about his faith journey and what he sees as the greatest need and the greatest desire of the next generation.
“Millennials have received a lot of coddling or a lot of criticism, but they haven’t experienced a lot of coaching.”
In response to millennials being labeled noncommittal, cynical, entitled, slacktivists, Grant Skeldon started Initiative Network in order to shift the culture of Dallas by training millennials to be Christ-loving, city-changing, church-investing, disciple-making local missionaries.
MINGO PALACIOS: Developing Next Gen Leaders
Pastor of Evangelism & Culture: Saddleback Church
We are not only called to reach the next generation with the gospel, we are also called to equip and release them into their God given purpose. This might mean a disruption of our current ministry model. Mingo will speak from his experience developing Next Gen leaders, and share what he is seeing as he works with churches around the country.
“If we determine to stop talking ABOUT the future of the church, and instead, start talking humbly WITH the future of the church, we can actually start to make the kind of progress the Creator of the Church always intended.”
Mingo has served as a young adults pastor, camp director, videographer, creative director and is now the Pastor of Evangelism and Culture at Saddleback Church in Orange County, California. He is passionate about discovering creative new ways to reach, disciple and raise up leaders in the next generation.
JONATHAN “JP” POKLUDA: How We Reach and Disciple Young Adults
Teaching Pastor: Watermark Church, leader of The Porch
While no model is perfect, many are useful to learn from. In 18 years Watermark Church has grown to a weekly attendance of over 10,000 people at three campuses. Every Tuesday night over 3,000 young adults from around the metroplex gather at Watermark Dallas for worship and teaching. JP will share their ministry philosophy and experience with discipling young adults.
Jesus’ call to his followers was to “come and die.” If you’re not reaching millennials, your church is dying. You don’t need tricks and tactics; you need to be the church by calling everyone you minister to, to be the church.”
“JP” as he is most commonly known, is the Dallas Campus Pastor for Watermark Church, as well as leader of their young adults ministry, “The Porch”. Baptized there as a new believer, JP is not only a leader at Watermark, his life is fruit of the ministry.
JOHN POITEVENT: Our Future, Our Calling
Director: Leadership Network Innovate:NOW! and HUB:Missional Engagement
The data tells us statistics about millennials, but what does they mean for the future of the church? Could the characteristics that make them unique be the very thing that we need? John will take a look at trends in millennial culture and how, when embraced, they might actually help churches become more biblical.
“They show far less concern about titles, profits and rituals, and more interest in relationships, purpose and authenticity, and so I believe that we are about to see a much needed culture shift in the areas of power and influence.”
John has served in a variety of ministry roles, including missionary, creative director, teacher and pastor. He has been involved with Leadership Network for 8 years, first as a participant and now as Director of Innovate:NOW! and our Missional Engagement HUB.
