Gateway is a fast-growing greater-Dallas congregation that started on Easter Sunday, 2000 with a service of 180 people. By July 2001, it had grown to five services with over 2,000 people attending weekly. Today, Gateway church has more than 20,000 people attending weekend services at four different locations.
In 2006, Gateway hired Gunnar Johnson (pictured at left) to be their executive pastor of stewardship, and they also joined one of the Generous Churches Leadership Communities sponsored by Leadership Network. Gateway's involvement didn't stop there. Gunnar has been a frequent guest at subsequent Leadership Network gatherings of Generous Chuches. Gunnar and his team also participated most recently in the Leadership Development Leadership Community which launched in 2011.
Because of this close relationship with Leadership Network, Gunnar, along with Gateway's Executive Pastor of Membership Craig Terndrup, was invited to attend a gathering in Portugal for the Rapid Growth and Multisite Leadership Communites – part of Leadership Network Europe.
When asked what prompted Gateway to become engaged in the European Leadership Community, Gunnar responded, “We have a heart for Europe, and lots of common interests with the kinds of things Leadership Network is doing there. We know the process Leadership Network takes … that it will impact each church involved. So for us it's an eternal investment. We look for what the Lord is doing and invest in it. We feel Leadership Network is one of those things.” Gunnar continued, “I really do hope other churches invest in what Leadership Network is doing – it's strategic in its impact. Why would we not work with catalytic groups like Leadership Network?”
