Author Insights with Alan Hirsch

May 8, 2013

Alan Hirsch is widely considered a thought leader in missional church and leadership circles.  He is the author of nine books, including, one of his most recent, “The Permanent Revolution: Apostolic Imagination and Practice for the 21st Century Church” and also, “The Forgotten Ways”. Currently he coleads Future Travelers an innovative learning program helping megachurches become missional movements.

If someone came to you and said they were thinking of writing a book, what advice would you give them?

“It's a good thing to clarify your own thinking, but I suggest that you should only write if you really believe it adds value and further develops understanding.  There are way too many bubblegum theology books out there that simply clutter the Christian reading public.”

Name a person who has had a tremendous impact on you as a leader? Why and how did this person impact your life?

“There are many, but one man named Don Smith believed in me when others did not.  He took a big risk on me by opening up his world to me.  Permission giving is a blessing.”

Explain the impact, if any, that technology (including social media, the Internet, digital publishing, etc) has made on your organization or you personally?

“Still working on that, but I am sure the game has changed.  My publishers have yet to catch up.”

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an author?

“Read widely and upwards.  Think! Strive for excellence in your trade.”

When you hear from your readers, what do they want to know?

“Things that I have already written in a book.  I refer them there.”
