I caught up with Toby Slough and interviewed him last month about his view, vision and experience of taking a Sabbatical. Toby is the founding Senior Pastor of Cross Timbers Community Church in Argyle, TX. It is a multi-site church with significant local, regional and global ministries.
Toby is also a participant in one of Leadership Network’s Senior Pastor 2 Leadership Communities. The Senior Pastor 2 LC’s are designed for Pastors who are generally in their 40’s leading large churches. In our first meeting, the topic of rest and sabbaticals was discussed and Toby had some great things to communicate to everyone.
In this podcast you will hear some of the key insights that Toby has gleaned from taking two different sabbaticals – one for 90 days, one for 30 days. He describes how he sensed he needed a sabbatical, how he asked for it, and how he decided what to do during each sabbatical. He also had to deal with his personal questions of “is this selfish?” and “what are my wife’s fears about me suddenly hanging around the house?” One of the most intriguing ideas that Toby talks about is his new found understanding of “A New Normal”.
