What are churches doing today to make the greatest difference for Christ beyond our borders? Leadership Network is trying to find out, and you can help. Why are we doing this? According to Eric Swanson, director of the Global Connections Leadership Community, "Some of the best models for global ministry come not from doing things "to" people or "for" people but with people in real partnerships with those who have eyes, ears, and feet on the ground. What kind of partnerships do you have? We'd like to find out what's working and where you may be stuck so we can all makle a greater kingdom impact." A Life-Giving Church in Both Spanish and English

A Life-Giving Church in Both Spanish and English

Posted on 3/19/2013 by Warren Bird

Who could have imagined what God would do when an English-language church started a Bible study cell in Spanish? The Spanish-language group grew until it became a church. It continued to grow until it became one of the largest-attendance churches in the city of Orlando, Florida. Today, 30 years later, an entire generation of first-generation Hispanic immigrants have found Christ through this pioneering church named Iglesia El Calvario (Calvary Church), member of the ######## of God. But what about their children who may prefer English? They value their Hispanic heritage but want a more English-friendly environment,...

"The condition of your heart will always determine the course of your life" (The Heart Revolution) Sergio De La Mora believes that God has called him to start a heart revolution. To this leading-voice pastor of Cornerstone Church in San Diego, a heart revolution comes from experiencing the ongoing power of Christ. It results in a life marked by forgiveness and hope. It leads us to choose to move forward, keeping our heart turned toward God rather than letting the circumstances of life dictate our destiny.

Developing Bold Faith in Your Congregation

Amazing Faith was a hard book for me to put down. I read every page. It's the kind of book that leaders and members alike can profit from. The author, Wilfredo "Pastor Choco" de Jesus, leads an amazing church, and he has captured its heartbeat through a powerful series of stories. The narrative weaves back and forth between a heart-touching story of life change at the church and a parallel example or teaching in Scripture, both told in a compelling way. By reading the book, my faith was encouraged and stretched, but I also came to understand how a church of 150 people became the largest-attendance church today in the ######## of God, both English and Spanish. Combining all campuses, plus the churches they've planted over the last 10 years, New Life Covenant touches about 14,000 people each weekend.

The Rise of English-Friendly Hispanic Churches

The Rise of English-Friendly Hispanic Churches

Posted on 1/9/2013 by Warren Bird

An important shift is happening among churches ministering to Hispanic Americans: more and more are becoming English dominant, according to a recent major article published by Huffington Post. "They have become very English-oriented in some ways, but they didn't lose their Spanish side,” the article quotes one researcher as observing, as the article highlights several churches including Chicago's New Life Covenant Church, a Spanish-speaking Pentecostal congregation that had 125 members a dozen years ago when it's name was, Templo Cristiano Palestina. Today it draws over 5,000 people weekly among English and Spanish congregations. In reaching out to English-speaking Hispanics, it started offering programs such as school tutoring, and branched out to more established suburbs where native-born Hispanics could be found.”

More than 100 Million Unchurched in the United States?

Posted on 9/19/2012 by Warren Bird

The book I co-authored with Tom Clegg, Missing in America, makes the following claim on page 175: According to the latest research, 1 out of every 3 adults (33%) in America is unchurched. This means they haven’t attended a religious service of any type during the past 6 months. This represents approximately 73 million adults, plus roughly 27 million teens and children for a total of 100 million Americans.... [click blog title to continue]

The new official statistic is that there are more than 5,000 multisite churches in North America. That’s more than 5,000 different churches, each of which has two or more different geographic campuses – one church in two or more locations. This finding was extrapolated from a national survey of churches of all sizes, and validated by Leadership Network’s constantly growing database of multisite churches.

How Many Megachurches?

How Many Megachurches?

Posted on 5/22/2012 by Warren Bird

Across the world, there are almost 5 million congregations (worship centers) – specifically, 4,738,000 churches according to the Center for the Study of Global Christianity’s “Status for Global Mission – 2012” (line 42). In some countries, especially those where Christianity is all but illegal, these gatherings of Christians are almost exclusively house churches in form. Only in some areas are Christians allowed join the public square with known and established places to gather. Thus for better or for worse, only in some countries are large public churches free to develop.

The best way to learn about megachurches is to participate in a worship service in person, or perhaps online as many offer internet campuses. (Megachurches are congregations with weekly worship attendance of 2,000 and more including children.)

If you do an internet search for “biggest churches” or similar, you will find lots of websites listed. The vast majority deal with facilities, not people. They track the most square footage, the most acreage, the tallest buildings, the highest steeples, the costliest construction, the longest times from groundbreaking to final completion, and the like. Some record seating or standing capacity.
