Leading Beyond Something to Prove

My senior pastor said “I need you to lead not teach. I need Yancy to teach, not lead.” - He said the worst thing he could say to me. He named my anti-vision. Everything we desire is not necessarily God’s vision for our life. Especially in ministry where its easy to cloak. Sometimes we desire a projection of what we want to become and have. God’s vision is revealed though His divine design in our created being and His mastery over every event in our lives. Projection is rooted in idolizing other people’s gifts and talents. God began to teach me living His visions vs. chasing my projection of ministry idolatry. I was amazed how people can spend their whole lives in ministry without anyone speaking truth in love in a deep way. Proverbs - rebuke a wise man and he will love you. How can you discern the difference between living in God’s vision and chasing your projection? In your own projection, you are constantly needing to prove yourself. There is always something to lose. Joy is trumped by jealousy. You are continually validating your own gifts. In God’s vision – you are freed up to live in God’s vision. You have freedom from image management and the ability to be yourself. It starts with Beautiful Honesty.

Discussion Questions:
1. Who has had a brutally honest conversation with you about your ministry? How did it help your ministry?
2. When you are honest with yourself, do you feel like you have something to prove?
