Fast Forwarding Your Church’s Community Engagement

By Warren Bird and Reggie McNeal published on May 10, 2011

More churches are pioneering a shift toward community service.  Not only are they deploying their own members; they are engaging people outside the church to work in the community. Missional Churches are strategically working together with other churches and non-church organizations to transform their cities and communities. Reggie McNeal, Leadership Network’s missional leadership specialist, examines the trends and other developments in these missional churches.
In this podcast, Warren Bird interviews Reggie McNeal about missional churches. In their discussion, they talk about how more American’s are spiritually involved outside the church and how they are participating in more works of service. Topics include the different types of community service and how others outside the church become involved. Questions such as, “What does the new scorecard look like?” are discussed.  Finally, they examine the rise in true collaboration across multiple domains in a community.

Things have changed. When I read the “markers” section at the end of the article, I saw something that made me gulp:  it’s the old human & social service model:  i.e., LOS (Levels Of Service). The groups that I see doing social/community ministry the best way have moved away from LOS (“Last year we served 100 hungry people each week; this year we’re serving 200 hungry people each week; next year we hope, by God’s grace, to feed 300 hungry people each week!”) to positive outcomes (i.e. How many hungry people that you serve are no longer hungry? How many people that you serve are no longer homeless? etc.). Secular service providers & foundtations that fund ministries began figuring this out 10 years ago. When is the Church going to catch up?!

The documents that I have downloaded are in non-sizable web pages with PDF documents.  Unfortunately, these documents are not printable an are too small to read.  Could you please comment?

You have put into writing something many of us in the inner cities/urban areas of America have been trying to do for generations.

It is good to know that the Lord is revealing to others how Christians can become more fruitful by joining with others to help hurting communities.

I look forward to working with you.

Reggie

Just finished studying, Missional Communities: The rise of the post-congregational church. What a rich resource for understanding the Missional Community concept. I’m looking forward to see how we can incorporate Missional Communities into our Multiethnic Mega-Church Multi-site ministry.

The need for the church to help their community must be empasised repeatedly to Church leaders. Jesus Christ went about doing good not only Bethlehem, judea, and jerusalem.
He was GOING ABOUT DOING GOOD.
May the Lord help us
