Multisite: The Next Decade

Blog series featuring discussions by multisite churches and leaders on what the next ten years will bring for the movement.
Just a little over ten years ago Leadership Network convened our first gathering of multisite churches and leaders. Much has happened in the multisite movement since that initial meeting. When we first gathered, terminology such as campus pastor, original campus and central support systems, didn't exist. Today these phrases and roles are a part of the common vernacular of the Church. The conversations about physical property have expanded to include establishment of campuses online and thoughts about extending reach across town have grown to include across the country and literally around the world.
So, what will the next 10 years bring? That's a great question. Leadership Network recently convened some of the pioneers of the movement to have just that discussion. Check out this first in a series of posts sharing what we heard.

Multisite: Next Decade - Avoiding the Dumb Tax
I think the first person that I heard use the phrase "dumb tax" was Larry Osborne, Senior Pastor of North Coast Church in Vista, CA. In Larry's characteristic self-effacing manner, he commented, "We made a lot of decisions along the way that ended up needing to be changed and we enjoy passing along our learnings so that others don't have to pay the 'dumb tax.'" When we gathered for our Multisite:Next Decade experience we asked churches to respond to the question, "What are the things that you didn't know when you started and that you do know now and how did you learn them?" Check out this Multisite: Next Decade post to see some of their answers.
Multisite: Next Decade - Avoiding the Dumb Tax (Part 2)
In this week's installment of Multisite: Next Decade - Avoiding the Dumb Tax (Part 2), we learn from LCBC - Lives Changed By Christ, LifeChurch.tv and The Chapel by asking them the same question..."What are the things that you didn't know when you started and that you do know now and how did you learn them?" Join me as we gather some insight into their ministries and the knowledge they have gathered along the way.

It's time again for another installment of Multisite: Next Decade - Avoiding the Dumb Tax (Part 3). This week we learn how Manna Church, New Life Community Church and North Coast Church answer the question, "What are the things that you didn't know when you started and that you do know now and how did you learn them?" Join me as we gather some insight into their ministries and the knowledge they have gathered along the way.
Multisite: Next Decade - Avoiding the Dumb Tax (Part 4)
In our final installment of Multisite: Next Decade - Avoiding the Dumb Tax (Part 4), we learn from Seacoast Church and Woodside Bible Church by asking them the same question..."What are the things that you didn't know when you started and that you do know now and how did you learn them?" Multisite Next Decade - Big Idea #1
As we continue to review the learnings of the Multisite Next Decade gathering, we turn to the first of a series of big ideas that surfaced as pioneering multisite churches gathered to explore what's next for the movement. The first of the big ideas we will take a look at is centered around the concept of the potential for global impact.
Multisite Next Decade - Big Idea #2
Next up in our Multisite: Next Decade - Bid Ideas series is Manna Church in Fayetteville, NC and Seacoast Church in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Both churches focus on reaching others by travelling the globe. Take a moment to view their presentations to see how they would use their strengths for world impact.
Multisite Next Decade - Big Idea #3
Next up in our Multisite: Next Decade - Bid Ideas series is Community Christian Church in Naperville, IL. While other churches sought to enlarge the Kingdom by reaching the far parts of the globe, Community Christian Church's idea is to impact thier local community. Watch as they present us with their plan.
Multisite Next Decade - Big Idea #4
In our final installment of the Multisite: Next Decade - Bid Ideas, we share the ideas submitted by Woodside Bible Church and LifeChurch.tv. Each chuch has a very unique, Christ focused way they would invest $1M into the Kingdom.
Multisite Next Decade - Leadership Development
During a series of sessions called "content cafes,' Multisite Next Decade churches were given an opportunity to learn about a variety of topics that addressed the challenges and opportunities they face. The fact that leadership development continues to occupy a top position on the greatest challenges for multisite churches was no surprise. To address that challenge we invited Jeff Conley, Director of Organizational Development for Rent-a-Center to share some of the principles of how that organization develops it's people through a servant leadership based process.
Multisite Next Decade - Missional Communities
This week we continue our focus on the next session of "content cafes' with Missional Development. One of the many areas multisite churches face is to continually break new ground and grow. With new multisite locations costing upwards of $250,000 to launch, it has become increasely harder to reach further into the community. Greg Nettle joins us to elaborate on how RiverTree Christian Church is leveraging GoCommunities.
Multisite Next Decade - Mergers
Next up in recapping our "cafe sessions," we have the opportunity to listen to Jim Tomberlin. Jim is the co-author of "Better Together: Making Church Mergers Work" and a leader in the multisite movement. Although mergers have long been thought of as counter-productive, Jim offers up new data that suggests it is the greatest asset to growing churches looking to expand their reach into the community.
In our last "cafe session" we visit with Andy Addis of CrossPoint in Hutchinson, KS. Andy discusses the challenges and wins of the everyday operations of a rual, multisite church. Join me as we gain some insight into this growing church.
