Conversations: Stephen Smith on the Power of Mastering Central Support
We are excited to continue a new Leadership Network blog series called “Conversations on Church Innovations.” These video and audio posts feature candid conversations with innovative church leaders from across the country talking about the areas of ministry they are passionate about.
Stephen Smith is the Gathering Pastor at Houston’s First Baptist Church in Houston, TX. Stephen has a long history with Houston’s First Baptist starting in 1995. He was there at the launch of the Gathering service more than 10 years ago and led worship at the Ascend service when it launched in 2005. He began directing the Momentum Ministry Group in 2002, and most recently, he served as the Worship Pastor at First Baptist Irving. In his role Stephen gives leadership to and oversees the Choral, Praise Band and Production Directors. This structure allows him to provide broad vision and direction for the Music/Worship Ministry, and enables the three directors to give dedicated time and expertise to their respective areas. Stephen married Star in 1994, they have four children: Madison, Jackson, Hope and Avonlea.
Leadership Network Director Tim Nations had the opportunity to talk with Stephen Smith about the multi-site approach within a church that is over a hundred years old. Stephen discusses how not to create clones, how not to “offload” people but how to show people the great experience within the gathering growth. Enjoy this Conversation!
