Leadership Network recently co-hosted the Doing More with Less conference with New Direction Church in Memphis, Tennessee. The conference featured 9 pastors sharing their passion and vision of doing more with less and continuing to expand our thinking beyond the 4 walls of a local church building.
In his recent Learnings post, Warren Bird wrote an excellent summation of several speakers. One of his highlights was hearing about the success of the charter school that New Direction Church began. Ironically enough, this school was recently highlighted in the May 7, 2012 issue of the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
The charter school, Power Center Academy, began 4 years ago in the Sunday School Building of New Direction Church. The church leadership saw this school as an opportunity to serve and invest in the surrounding community of Hickory Hill. This vision has now morphed into a school that is the "strongest performing middle school in the state." The Academy recently received a cash infusion of $3.5 million to help duplicate the same type of charter schools in the area. Furthermore, Power Center Academy is now listed by Tennessee as one of the charter schools it is partnering with to take over the city schools throughout the state of Tennessee.
By choosing to invest in the next generation within their surrounding community, Power Center Academy has not only improved the education of those students, but will now have a far reaching impact into the state of Tennessee for many generations.
